Originally funded by the US Army - Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program, Kutta was tasked with developing a new radio device to meet the challenges of subterranean communications. Through multiple trade studies and several years of research and development, Kutta was able to create an innovative medium frequency radio capable of transmitting voice & data signals for several miles in underground environments.
As the technology continued to evolve, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) expressed an interest in further developing the radio for use in underground coal mines. Working in partnership with NIOSH, Kutta was able to demonstrate successful communications using existing mine infrastructure, and together have made significant strides in enhancing worker safety in the coal mining industry.
Today, Kutta’s DRUM® Communication System is Part 23 MSHA approved for underground operation, and has been successfully installed in multiple mines throughout the United States.
